American Abalone is an aquaculture business that spawns and grows California Red Abalone within the pristine waters of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
The company operates a land-based facility where they use seawater pumps that continuously supply clean, fresh seawater to the abalone that are grown inside tanks. The abalones are grown in a very natural manner with various types of local seaweeds.
The abalone farm at Davenport has been producing the highest quality red abalone and shipping them live around the world for over 20 years. California farm raised red abalones have been selected by the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Sea Watch program as an excellent choice for environmentally conscience seafood consumers.
Amercian Abalone sells live abalone and abalone steaks, tenderized and ready for preparation. Abalone are members of a large class (Gastropoda) of mollusks having one-piece shells. They belong to the family Haliotidae and the genus Haliotis, which means sea ear, referring to the flattened shape of the shell.
The red abalone is a gastropod (univalve) having a large, oval shell shaped like a shallow bowl. It is the largest of California's marine snails and one of several abalone species inhabiting the California coast.
Abalone feed on algae, and the red or coral color of the outer surface of a red abalone shell (the shell's epidermis) results from consumption of red algae.
The interior surface of the abalone shell (to which its soft tissue is attached) is mother-of-pearl, or nacre. Its relative smoothness and high luster have made it an attractive material for making ornaments in both prehistoric and historic times.
America Abalone was recently featured on CBS' "Eye on the Bay". Watch the video of their Davenport day trip HERE. |
